Some sad news about our President of the Devon Art Society

Alwyn Crawshaw 1934 – 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of Alwyn Crawshaw announced his passing. He had inspired probably millions of artists across the world.  We were so privileged to count him as our President for so many years.

Alwyn died peacefully at his home on the Norfolk coast after an illness, on Monday 10th November 2025, aged 91.  Alwyn was a much-loved British artist, author, and broadcaster, renowned for his passion for painting and his dedication to inspiring others through art. Over a long and distinguished career, he became a familiar and trusted figure to millions through his television series, books, and teaching — sharing his love of painting with warmth, humour, and immense generosity of spirit.

Studio meetings are held on Tuesday mornings 10am – 12pm October to May.  At our Studio in St Luke’s Church Hall TQ2 5NX, which is situated at the top of Shedden Hill in Torquay this is the road that goes up from Torquay seafront opposite the bridge.  These sessions vary from painting from own resources, life, portrait, themed still-life and occasional demonstrations from prominent professional artists. All you need to bring is paper or canvas and your choice of medium, watercolour, pencil etc.   We work from a programme of different subjects each week.  Bring a reference photo which you can copy from.  You can always choose your own subject and do your own thing you do not have to follow the programme. All abilities welcome, help and advice is always available to new members and beginners. Easels, tables and chairs are available for your use.  Tea and Coffee is provided. There is also a weekly charge of £3 at each meeting or £5 when there is a demonstration.
